Cinemaware

Most PC gamers of a certain age remember the golden age of Cinemaware, a company that brought beautiful graphics (for their time) and a nice big-screen-style presentation to games like The Three Stooges, Rocket Ranger, It Came from the Desert and Defender of the Crown. The titles were often mini-game heavy, but they had a certain panache, great sound effects and an arcade feel. From about 1986-1989, Cinemware put out some fondly remembered classics for the Commodore 64, Amiga, DOS and Apple IIGS. Like all good things, the streak had to end, and apparently the company overextended itself by trying to develop for too many platforms. Today, the games are still well-regarded, but efforts to revive the brands have met with little success. A new version of Defender of the Crown was like a wayward arrow, suffering the same fate as the update to The Bard’s Tale: it was exciting in theory, but ignored by gamers as an actual product. We hear Cinemaware is still trying to put some new games out there, but things have been awfully quiet. We also hear they might be working on some mobile games, which, you know… good luck with that.

Ah the days when Amiga ruled the world. Shadow of the Beast, Wings, Speedball… good times. Useless trivia bit — my company designed the first version of the reborn Cinemaware’s website (not the one up now). Unfortunately they seemed to have slipped off the face of the earth pretty quickly after that.
