Karate Champ, One-Joystick Moves of

Modern fighters like Street Fighter, Tekken and Virtua Fighter owe a large debt to Techos Japan’s groundbreaking Karate Champ. Released to arcades in 1984, Karate Champ employed a novel control scheme using two joysticks per player to execute all the game’s moves. However, due to the level of immersion this scheme provided, players were often too rough for the cabinet and one of the joysticks would break. The following are a list of moves possible with just one joystick:

  • Roundishhouse Kick
  • Left-handed Face Slap
  • Upper-Left Block
  • One Hand Clap
  • Single Hand Grab
  • Single Double Hand Grab
  • The Angry Bird
  • Somewhat Forward Hand Snap
  • Front Breezemill
  • The Quarterway House
  • A Good Part of the Enchilada
  • 50-Hand Slap
  • The Claude Sedan-Damm
  • Left Fist of Fury
  • Hopping Dropkick
