Track & Field, Most Helpful Apparatuses for

Track and Field

Track & Field (known as Hyper Olympics outside of North America) was an arcade hit from 1983. It featured six separate events which saw the player frantically mashing buttons to run faster, jump higher and throw further. Players quickly jerry-rigged contraptions to best what was possible with fingers alone.

  • Number 2 pencil
  • 12 inch standard-issue schoolhouse ruler
  • Elastic band pulled tight between thumb and pinky
  • Drinking bird toy attached to fan belt and Honda generator
  • Fast Eddie, the speed-taking small town hobo
  • Mason jar, filled with bumblebees, placed upside down over buttons
  • Paint can mixing tumblers placed over buttons with custom heavy-duty metal frame
  • Place state-of-the-art Hypercolor shirt over buttons and invite school children to discover the magic
  • Dancing beer can toys spazzing out to King Diamond album
  • Hide sunflower seeds and termites under run buttons. Duct tape woodpeckers to dash
  • Convince WWII veterans to send ship in distress messages over morse code

The thing about this game that I thought odd even as a small kid was that people were so lost in tapping those buttons as fast as possible that they actually ended up not watching the screen.

I remember people slapping the arcade console. They weren’t tapping the buttons, they were slapping them like bongos. It made for a lot of noise, but then arcades were crazy noisy back then anyway.
